Press release: Labour benefits scheme offers no alternative to the Con-Dems says youth campaign

"Today Labour unveiled a new scheme to get the unemployed into work and training. This scheme will see people who have been unemployed for more than two years forced to take up a government provided job. Tellingly, Balls and Byrne are yet to say whether these jobs will come with a secure, long-term contract or whether this will be just another workfare style wheeze. Short-term or insecure contracts will leave the doors open for companies to use unemployed people as a source of cheap labour. When it comes to people seeking work, Labour have bought into exactly the rhetoric of lazy workshy scroungers as the Tories. Yet again politicians say they will stop benefits for those who don’t take up a job.

Defend London Met’s international students

The UK Border Agency’s decision to revoke London Metropolitan’s licence to teach international students was cruel and calculated. It threatens to wreck thousands of lives. Over 2,000 students currently midway through their courses face the prospect of enforced deportation. While a 60 day ‘grace period’ is given in order for students to attempt to transfer to other universities, the reality is for many (if not most) this will prove impossible. As well as the horrendous effect on current London Met students, those expecting to come to London to begin courses in September are also going to be hit. They will be unable to begin their studies as planned.

Through the week, as we visit different towns and cities, we hope to build Youth Fight for Jobs Cymru by finding young and keen people from all sections of society, from the unemployed, to students, to trade unionists and so on, who are ready to fight back against this lethal Con-Dem government and its rotten policies, and want to join us in our campaigning work. We are also using the week to introduce our new manifesto to south and westWales, called ‘A future for the 99%’. The manifesto takes up the issues mentioned above plus more, such as fighting the far right for example.

No choice but poverty or homelessness

I’m 25. I have been forced to move from the inner London borough that I grew up in and have lived in since birth, to an outer-London borough away from friends, family and the community I have invested 25 years in. I’m not alone. I’m a low paid part-time worker with a decent degree and the soaring inner London house prices have meant I, alongside presumably hundreds of other working class young people, have been forced out to make way for a growing gentrification of the capital.

30-04-2012

Moving Out

I’m 25 and have recently moved out of my parent’s house. I wanted to stay in the borough I have grown up in and built a relationship with, but the rents there are extortionate and rising fast. Instead I have had to move to a cheaper outer London borough. Moving is a stressful enough experience and that’s without having to deal with council services that have been cut to the bone and dodgy landlords looking to bleed you dry.

Youth Fight for Jobs and Education, national organiser, Paul Callanan, said: “We very much welcome these moves from the NUS for a national demonstration in the autumn term and a national walkout of college students. The last time the NUS held a national demo was in November 2010, when over 50,000 students marched inLondonagainst sky-high fees and the scrapping of EMA. That unleashed a movement of strikes, protests and walkouts that spread like wildfire across the country. That’s what we need to do again if the wholesale destruction of education is to be stopped”

Open letter to Trade unionists on Low Pay Commission

Yesterday myself and other young workers were shocked to hear that the minimum wage will be frozen this year for those under 21. This is the first time that there has been a freeze in any aspect of the minimum wage. In addition to this, apprentices will get a measly 5p an hour pay rise, whilst those 21 and over will get a miserly 11p an hour pay rise, both way below the level that inflation is officially running at.

Call for national demo against Workfare

Dear Brother/Sister, I am writing to you on behalf of the Youth Fight for Jobs campaign. We would like to urgently meet with you to discuss jointly calling a national demonstration against workfare. It is clear that with mass unemployment particularly among young people, workfare has been and will be a cause of mass anger. We have already won successes with the companies involved and the government making concessions on a number of issues.

REAL JOBS - NOT WORKFARE

As unemployment rises the vultures are circling. Among the biggest is Tesco. But they met huge opposition when they advertised a full-time, permanent position for which you would receive a meagre dole payment plus expenses – all part of the Con-Dems’ slave labour Work Programme. We’ve already bailed out the banks to the tune of billions. Now massive corporations are being subsidised by the state to take on unpaid workers. The government gets to pretend to be helping unemployed people ‘get experience’ and big business gets work done on the mega-cheap.

Main parties have no solution to youth unemployment

An audience of 200 gathered inSalfordrecently to discuss and debate the latest unemployment figures on BBC Radio 5 Live. These figures showed that unemployment rose by 50,000 to 2.67 million in the three months to December. Tory MP Sam Gyimah was asked whether he thinks that a poverty benefit of £67 a week is enough to live on. After stumbling around trying to squirm out of an answer he admitted it wasn’t. And both Lib Dem John Leech and Labour’s Emma Reynolds admitted they’d struggle on the Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) too.

No to Slave Labour!

Over the past few months the government's work experience scheme has come under increasing scrutiny. The scheme attempts to introduce slave labour for the young unemployed, with young people working 30 hours a week for eight weeks and receiving no additional pay on top of their Job Seekers Allowance (JSA), which they are threatened with losing if they do not participate.
